UK slime

Here are the ingredients to make homemade slime:

  1. 120ml of PVA glue (½ cup)
  2. ½ Tbsp of bicarbonate of soda
  3. ½ cup of shaving cream (not gel)
  4. 1 Tbsp of contact lens solution (remember, one with boric acid, like Renu MPS) (BBC Good Food only has 1 tsp - experiment)
  5. Food colouring (optional if you want to make coloured slime)
  6. Glitter (optional if you want to make it shine!)

Steps to make slime contact lens solution

  1. Use a big bowl to mix all ingredients thoroughly
  2. Pour the 120ml of glue in the container. Add 2 Tbsp of water and stir with a spoon or spatula
  3. Add the shaving cream and stir again
  4. Add the bicarbonate of soda and stir
  5. Add the food colouring and glitter. You can add them gradually and stir several times until you get the desired consistency
  6. Now add the contact lens solution. Add slowly whilst you continue to stir. Check the consistency, too much and the slime won't be elastic
  7. As the slime becomes less liquid, take it out of the bowl and knead it with your hands. If you feel it still sticks too much to your hands, add a bit more of solution.
  8. Knead, knead, knead… TIME TO PLAY!

Your slime with contact lens solution is ready! Feel free to experiment with different amounts for different textures: for example, adding less shaving cream so the result is less fluffy, adding different or multiple colours, tweaking the amount of solution…the world is your slime oyster!

Why is My Slime Stringy?

Fluffy slime has a tendency to get stringy. If this happens, you may need to rinse it with water for about 30 seconds and then let it rest for about 2 minutes.

After that, knead the slime together and it should come together as one again and turn back into stretchy, fluffy slime.

Why is My Slime Sticky?

Sticky slime usually means you don't have enough activator. Try adding a bit more.

If that doesn't work, you may need to add something dry, like cornstarch, to help reduce how sticky your slime is. I like to add either cornstarch or shaving cream to eliminate stickiness.

Why is My Slime Watery?

Watery slime usually means you messed up the ratio, but it's usually completely fixable. If your slime is too watery, try this:

  1. Add more activator. It could be you just didn't add enough activator!
  2. Pour off excess liquid. It could be that you added too much water or activator and need to pour off some access.

If that doesn't work, try adding a bit more glue.

Time also makes slime less sticky when you use this recipe. Allow your slime to sit for about 5 minutes to fully bond chemically and you'll have less of a mess when it's playtime!
